Amazon's Lord Of The Rings Series Will Span 5 Seasons

And you thought Game of Thrones was expensive...

As part of Amazon's $250 million rights deal with the Tolkien estate to bring The Lord of the Rings to television, the network has guaranteed five seasons which must enter production within two years. With production factored in, the cost of the series is expected to cost over $1 billion.

Further complicating the deal, Amazon also had to negotiate with New Line Cinema who, while never having the television rights, was still necessary in case Amazon wanted to use anything from the films.

Peter Jackson, director of the film adaptations and The Hobbit series, wasn't involved in the original 2017 negotiations but his attorney recently opened a dialogue between Jackson and Amazon.
