Konami's 'Contra' Headed To The Big And Small Screen (Updated)

Details are scant, must be secret.

Kids who grew up in the 1980s might remember Konami's Contra run and gun game in the arcades. If you weren't so social, the game also made its way to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) a year later in 1988, and it's sequel Super Contra aka. Super C was included in last year's retro hit console, the NES Classic Edition. Despite it's name, the game wasn't set in the late 70s to early 90s involving rebel groups in Nicaragua fighting the Sandinista National Liberation Front (though the name was inspired by that and the NES version did set it in 1987).

No, the game was set in 2633 in the Galuga archipelago. You could play solo as elite commando Pfc. Bill Rizer (blonde with blue bandana) or add Pfc. Lance Bean (brunette with red bandana) in two-player mode fighting enemy forces (and aliens). A good amount of the game was side-scrolling, but also had a "3d" view shooting into the background, and non-scrolling areas.

Why are we talking about an old arcade game (which to be fair, has had many sequels since)? Well, today Konami confirmed that they are working to transform this ip into both a live-action film and a television drama. The movie project will be headquarted in China, as Konami is working with Chinese firm Starlight Film to produce it.

No details on when these projects will be available to audiences, but when word of a Contra film was first reported, it was said the movie would hit June 6, 2018.

According to GoNintendo, this is the official movie synopsis:

In 1988, a huge meteorite lands on an uninhabited island in the South China Sea. Chen Qiang and Li Zhiyong investigate but come up empty handed. 29 years later, Chen sends commandos Bill and Lance into a combat mission there to neutralize the villainous Red Falcon Organization, but end up facing a different enemy altogether.
