Marvel's Retailers Only Panel Goes Off The Rails As Two Retailers Argued About Diversity

Marvel held a Retailer's Only panel on Thursday during New York Comic Con and for the most part, it was a by the numbers event. Retailers asked if there was going to be a Secret Empire Omega #2 (no) and asked about not including an issue number #1 on future one-shots (maybe?). Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort explained how Avengers: No Surrender, the weekly event starting in January, already had six of sixteen issues completed.

Then near the end one retailer got lots of applause for objecting to the ordering process for the Marvel Lenticular covers. Then he objected to the fact that Marvel now had female versions of characters instead of the males. Two other retailers than voiced their opinions that diversity doesn't work. The words "black", "homo" and "freaking females" were thrown around, at which point other retailers started to boo those retailers and the room started to turn on itself.

Marvel editor Nick Lowe tried to ease the situation by saying that Marvel try and they tell stories for everyone and that there is room for old and new characters. The panel then abruptly ended with Marvel's Senior Vice President of Sales David Gabriel offering his email to retailers with any more questions.

Meanwhile, other comics news outlets who rely on Marvel's ad dollars downplayed the events by stating, "Lowe closed the panel by responding to complaints about replacement characters or characters being changed saying that there will continue to be characters that appeal to all readers of Marvel Comics, and that they are committed to both their new and returning characters."
