Spock's Mom Cast For 'Star Trek: Discovery'

Source: EXCLUSIVE: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Executive Producers Reveal Who Is Playing Amanda And Talk Season 2

Back when details of Star Trek: Discovery was only first being disclosed, then-showrunner Bryan Fuller  said that they wanted to stay away from previous  Star Trek characters so that he could establish his own show. Well, Fuller's no longer running the show and we are seeing that an already established character, Sarek (James Frain) was a key role in the first episodes, and know that Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson) is appearing.

Going back to Fuller's previous comments, he mentioned that we might see Spock's (and now we know, Burnham) human mom and Sarek's wife, Amanda Grayson in Discovery's second season. Well, apparently we'll be seeing her sooner than that (a second season has not been greenlit yet). In an interview with Discovery showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg and executive producer Heather Kadin, it was revealed that Amanda Grayson was already cast for the show. Canadian actress Mia Kirshner (Defiance) will be playing the Lady Amanda in the latest Trek series.

Amanda Grayson's first onscreen appearance was in The Original Series episode Journey To Babel (1967), played by Jane Wyatt. Wyatt reprised her role in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). Majel Barrett voiced the animated version of her in the episode Yesteryear (1973). Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) had a very brief appearance of the character at the time of Spock's birth, played by Cynthia Blaise. in 2009, Winona Ryder played an alternate universe version of the character in the Star Trek movie reboot. No further information on Grayson's appearance in Discovery was disclosed.

The interview also touched on other Trek continuity bits, including what might have been a SPOILER by one of the series directors Jonathan Frakes (answer: a non-answer). Also no word on Spock's brother from a different mother Sybok.

Star Trek: Discovery continues its missions on the pay-for streaming service CBS All-Access.
