Apparently 'Star Trek: Discovery' Will Go Where Other Treks Have Gone Before

Jonathan Frakes reflects on an upcoming story

*** RED ALERT! If you don't want to be SPOILED on any future Star Trek: Discovery stories, please reverse course now! ***

It looks like Star Trek: Discovery will venture onto grounds previously explored in previous incarnations. Of course the producers of the series pretty much set things up so that previous ground would be traversed upon. They set the series a decade before The Original Series was set (in the era of Captain Pike), they are using the Klingons in a big way, and will feature the appearance of characters who already have been shown in the past (such as Sarek and Harry Mudd).

So what will they be re-using this time? At a panel during a Creation Convention panel in Chicago, Jonathan Frakes (aka. Star Trek: The Next Generation's William T. Riker, aka. a director on Star Trek: Discovery) revealed that Discovery will be doing a "Mirror Universe" episode. Though never referring to the parallel/alternate universe by that name in-show, the Mirror Universe is a universe where things were in a lot of ways the opposite of the "prime" universe. For instance the mirror version has an I.S.S. (Imperial Star Ship) Enterprise manned by a savage and ruthless crew serving a Starfleet of the Terran Empire.

The mirror universe was first seen in The Original Series episode "Mirror, Mirror", followed by five episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, an Enterprise two-parter, and in several novels, and even the comics.

It isn't clear if Frakes is directing the Mirror Universe episode. Who would you like to see sporting an evil goatee on Star Trek: Discovery?
