SDCC: Marvel Working On An East Asian Initiative

Asian heroes, by Asian creators, in Asian languages

At the Cup O' Joe panel during San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), Marvel announced a new project involving East Asia. Marvel Vice President of International Business Development & Brand Management C.B. Cebulski, who previously spent time in Japan, is currently working in Shanghai to develop Marvel's brand in Asia. We've seen some results of this work -- a ramen pop-up, a cross-over with the Attack on Titan, and a Korean hero who appeared in Contest of Champions -- and now we are seeing two projects from China.

We actually knew for a while that Marvel was working on increasing their presence in the Chinese market, and create Chinese heroes, and now we are seeing some of the result. Cebulski introduced two projects at the panel, Sword Master and Aero.

Sword Master is male with ties to Captain America's WWII history and the mythology of the Ancient One by writer Xi Shanshan (Droplet) and artist Chen Xioyun (Gun Ji).

Aero will be a new Inhuman character written by Zhou Jiajun (Zhou Liefen) with artist Xu Ming (Keng).

The format for where these heroes would appear was not specified. The works will be in Chinese first, and in English later (though it wasn't announced that it would release in the US). Although the project will be edited by Mark Paniccia, the creative teams will be Asian.

Cebulski said that though Marvel has Asian character, they may be viewed as stereotypical, and this is a way for new characters to be more well recpart of the Marvel "Prime" Universe.
