'Cowboy Bebop' To Get A Live-Action TV Series

Oh no…

Cowboy Bebop, the stylish 1998 anime about a ragtag team of bounty hunters in the year 2017, is poised to get a new run on television… but this time as a live-action series.

Oh no.

Just when you thought the series was in the clear since the Hollywood film which planned to star Keanu Reeves is in development hell, now comes word for another western company (an American division of the British ITV Studios, Tomorrow Studios) to ruin  adapt the cartoon to live-action. Tomorrow Studios is said to be working with the original anime's production studio Sunrise, however neither original series director Shinichiro Watanabe nor original series music composer Yoko Kanno (or her band Seatbelts) have been mentioned to be associated with this project. One might argue that the director and composer played a big part in the original series' success.

Cowboy Bebop was a critical hit both in Japan and in the US, where it gained popularity on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. If cast correctly, the series may not get hit with the same kind of white-washing controversy that the recent Ghost in the Shell live-action film did. None of the main characters (Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV, or even Ein) in Bebop are explicitly Japanese in ethnicity.

No airdate has been announced for the series. Well, time for fans to grit their teeth.

See you space cowboy…
