Feige On How Powerful 'Captain Marvel' Is & Collaborating With Fox

That's… Pretty powerful…

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke with Variety about a few things Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), including the upcoming Captain Marvel movie. Much of the interview reiterates what he has said before, but with a few extra tidbits.

Before Brie Larson was announced as the Captain Marvel of the MCU, Feige said that we'd get the filmmaker and cast by the end of Summer. Well, we got the star, but we still don't have a director. Once again, Feige feels it is important that Marvel have a woman director for the first Marvel movie with a woman as its title character:

"Having a female director at the helm to tell the story of a woman who is also our most powerful hero by far is very important to us."

Feige has mentioned before that Captain Marvel would be be the most powerful in the MCU, saying:

"With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we've ever put in a movie. Her powers are off the charts, and when she's introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we've ever had."

That sounds pretty strong, but the onscreen Marvel characters tend to not be as powerful as their comic counterparts. Would Marvel (aka Carol Danvers), be able to beat up the strongest one there is, the Hulk for instance? Feige gives a bit more detail in the interview released today:

"If you had the collector cards of the Marvel characters and you could see the power levels, she would be off the charts compared to anyone that we've previously introduced in a film."

Okay, still pretty vague, but when talking about why Larson was the right choice, he adds:

"With Captain Marvel, who has powers that approach a level that we haven’t seen before in our films, you need to counter- balance that by finding somebody who is also very human and very relatable and can get into a groove with the audience, where they’re willing to see her fly through the sun and punch a moon away from a spacecraft. At the same time, we need her to land and have relatable flaws.

Brie is a person you’re going to want to go on this journey with, just like Benedict or Robert or Chris Pratt."

Okay that's stronger than the Hulk. Also, sorry other actors.

Also in the interview, in the context of Sony collaborating with Marvel on Spider-Man: Homecoming, Feige was asked if something similar might happen with X-Men or Fantastic Four over at Fox. His response?

"It's an impossibility at this juncture. We certainly have enough films to keep us busy for a number of lifetimes."

Oh well, looks like that cooperative exchange between the two companies was just a one-off.

Captain Marvel will punch a moon March 8, 2019.
